Vietnam Train Information

Vietnam train information

Vietnam by train is a much safer alternative to riding night busses. Travel in relative comfort between destinations and arrive refreshed and ready to sightsee.

It is time to update this old post. January 2019

Pricing….. A good rule of thumb is that a soft sleeper will
cost you about 10,000 dong per kilometer traveled is still a good rule of thumb.

Since I wrote this post, Vietnam has come roaring into modern times.

There is now a Vietnam railways website where you can get information on time tables and cost.

Check out Vietnam railways website here

Sorry…. You will find that your international credit card will not work. You need a Vietnam issued card and a local number. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the transportation link below.

  2. Hi Owee,

I will be coming from Singapore to HCM on 23-27 May. I will reach HCM ard 2pm and hope to travel to Nha Trang in the nite. Any suggestion where to take the Train or sleep bus ? Please provide the Train or Bus Station address. And place to stay in Nha Trang.

    Thanks a lot.
    Cheers

    1. Most of the sleeper busses have offices on Phan Ngu Lao street in the tourist area, very easy to find. The train station is about a 60000 dong ride away in district 3. Address is 1 Nguy?n Thông, ph??ng 9, qu?n 3. I suggest Carpe DM or the Ha Van in the tourist area……. my place is more suited to those that want a more “local” experience in Vietnam.

  3. Hi,
I am interested in booking a private cabin for 4 on an overnight train from Saigon to Nha Trang. But I got confused with many websites where I can do the booking on and about the few cabin choices.
Can someone point me to the right directions?
    Thanks!

    1. There is really no train reservation service that I am aware of offered by Vietnam railway. That may be why it looks confusing. Tickets have to be purchased and paid for in advance (no reservations) You may be able to get your hotel to purchase tickets for you. I am not sure if you can request a specific car.

  4. hi owee,

    1. Sorry John,
I was in Myanmar and did not have reliable internet. I am in Saigon now.
      I will email you

  5. Is it possible to purchase a ticket for SE03 Nha Trang to Saigon in Saigon Railway Station or do i need to purchase it at Nha Trang itself ?

    Thanks for assisting.

  6. HI Owee,
Good day to you! I am looking forward to spending 5 days in Vietnam. We plan to stay Danang for 3 days then take train to Ho Chi Mihn for another 2 days stay. Any suggest itenarery for us?

  7. Hi there, was just wondering if it is possible to get train tickets from Ho Chi Minh to Nha Trang on the day itself? I would be going during the last week of Dec. Thank you so much for your kind advice.

    1. Hi Jo,
It is quite often possible to book a train on the same day. It will all depend on whether it is a weekend and Christmas holidays. There is always a sleeper bus if the train is full.

  8. Hi Owee, Over the past few weeks, you have given me answers to a few questions that I have posted on the forum. Thankyou. I have somehow stumbled across this page & was wondering if you could answer a couple more questions.

We are travelling to Vietnam in January 2012 & want to catch a train from Hanoi to Da Nang.
Q1. Do you think booking 4 days ahead for train travel will be enough. I plan on booking train ticket first day we arrive in Hanoi. We really need to travel on a certain date.
Q2. We are family with 3 kids. Will we be allowed to have 4 berth sleeper with two younger kids sharring bed. (youngest is 4 years old)
Q3. Do you know approx cost for us to travel.( Kids ages: 11, 8, & 4)
    Thankyou very much.
    Karen.

  9. I am looking forward to spending 4 days in Nha Trang. I am a bit confused. It seems there are various trains from HCMC to Nha Trang. There are the S trains, and I also read that there is a 5star express which is not shown here. I am traveling with my family (2 adults 2 kids) and want to do the overnight train. Is ticket available in any travel agent in district 1? Will they deliver to the hotel where I’m staying (Sheraton)?

    1. The 5 star express train is now only a car added to the same SE trains. I am confused about it also as I have never seen it but know it exists (now called the golden train i think) All of the SE trains are decent and clean. Tickets can be easily arranged through your hotel and the tickets are delivered free of charge to the hotel. (expect a small hotel charge for the service)…. It might be cheaper to get a local agent to order it.. The Sheraton is a pricey placve after all 😉
