Vietnam Train Information

Vietnam train information

Vietnam by train is a much safer alternative to riding night busses. Travel in relative comfort between destinations and arrive refreshed and ready to sightsee.

It is time to update this old post. January 2019

Pricing….. A good rule of thumb is that a soft sleeper will
cost you about 10,000 dong per kilometer traveled is still a good rule of thumb.

Since I wrote this post, Vietnam has come roaring into modern times.

There is now a Vietnam railways website where you can get information on time tables and cost.

Check out Vietnam railways website here

Sorry…. You will find that your international credit card will not work. You need a Vietnam issued card and a local number. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the transportation link below.

  1. Hi Owee,

I am coming to Vietnam in September. Me and my girlfriend are looking at getting the train from Saigon to Phan Thiet, then Phan Thiet to Danang and onwards to Hue staying in the various places along the way. Not wanting to spend time when in the country trying to buy tickets is there anywhere/website you could recommend to buy rail tickets in advance?

    Thanks in advance!

    1. I am sorry Steve, but most ticket purchases are dome once here. I have had customers in the past arrange for a tour company look after tickets, but in the end it was a bit unreliable and there was panic purchasing of tickets involves. The only reliable prebooking is air I am afraid

  2. Hello Salam,
The cheapest way is to take a sleeper bus (I perefer Phuong Nam) for about 9 USD. Unless it is a holidy, last minute transport is not difficult. I am not hard to find…… see you in Nha Trang

  3. Hi owee,

My name is salam, i’m almost 20, i’m a french student and i’ll stay to nha trang for 2 months.
My plane is landing in Ho chi minh, how can i go to nha trang ? I’m just seeking a way simple and not very expansive. i dont want to take the place because i’ll not discover beautiful places. So i’m thinking about the train or the bus as you said. Is it easy to take the train at the last minuts and how about the prices ?

Also when i will be in nha trang, i will be glade to meet you, and listen about ur life in nha trang !

Thank you very much and see you soon

  4. Hello Owee, the wife and I were looking for a driver last minute to take us to Nha Trang today. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers.

  5. Thanks for the info & how do you go about getting a private driver?? & what sort of price should 1 pay?? as i don’t like the thought of motor bikes. Thanks again I may have more ? as I get closer 🙂

  6. Hi I have been seeing your name come up a lot. Which is good as you are helping a lot of people visiting Vietnam. Hopefully you can help us. We are coming over end of July for 2 weeks we have booked our 1st 2 nights in Saigon & are thinking of flying to Delat for a couple of days. Now things get hit & miss. My question is can you get train tickets the day before you travel?? As we won’t know if we like a place & might only stay 1 night & move on. We were thinking of trying to visit some of the small towns instead of all big ones.
Any advice would be appreciated.. Ps we will be stopping in at Nah Trang Maybe we can have a drink> Our 3 choices were Michelia,Prime & Sunny what do you think?
    Thank You

    1. Last minute travel by train is doable if you do not mind roughing it at times. If a train is not available, busses almost always are. If you are interested in stopping at smaller places, perhaps yu should consider an easyrider, or a private driver. The Michelia is a brand new hotel outside of the backpack area and would be my choice. It may be worth a try. I have heard a few not so positive stories about the Sunny, but all heresay. The prime is OK.
      I look forward to the drink;

  7. Hi Owee,

Thanks for posting this train information. But I still have a question. I am wondering if the Train from SGN stops in Phan Thiet? And if I can get on the train in Phan Thiet to go to Nha Trang?

    Thanks,
    James

    1. There are a number of trains that stop at Muong Man which is the closest to Phan Thiet (12 kms) It is most likely the easiest to contimue to Nha Trang by busses that run on a regular basis. You can also jump on a train in Muong Man to continue to Nha Trang, just check the times when you arrive.

  8. Yes…. those are prices in VND thousands from Nha Trang. I included it because a person can get a rough idea as to the costs if they study the photo a bit.

  9. Owee, on the third picture down there’s references to all the seat classifications. What are the numbers next to them and what do they mean? Is it pricing?

  10. Hi Owee!
