DIY Vietnam route maps

Ride Ken Ride

There is so much to see driving the back roads of Vietnam. Many people come here with the idea that driving will be the same as home. You are mistaken! In the last few blogs, I gave some advice on purchasing, motorcycle safety, rules, and tips to keep you uninjured.

Plan your route figuring on an average of 50 km per hour. This will provide you with time to do a bit of sightseeing and rest your aching rear end every 25 km or so. Remember!! Try never to drive at night. Even those of us who drive here on a regular basis will try to avoid it. It’s just not safe.
A few years ago, the Vietnamese government lifted the restrictions that banned foreigners on certain roads making it possible to go almost anywhere. In the past few years, the number of people risking the roads to drive Vietnam has greatly increased. Some of the roads I am suggesting can be in very bad and rough conditions, however, most I suggest are quite drivable.

Following is a number of Vietnam route maps that I use when guiding adventure tours. These routes have some infrastructure so a person can find accommodations and palatable food. I have marked suggested hotels, places to eat, and places to see that I feel most important. Of course it is your adventure, so feel free to try some off the map roads. Just keep in mind to time it so you arrive in your nightly destination before 5-5pm.

From Saigon to Dalat and Nha Trang Vietnam route maps.

There are two ways I suggest to make your way to Dalat and Nha Trang. Both routes have interesting spots to see and take the most scenic routes. I personally prefer the Oceanside route to Mui Ne then into the mountains as it is more scenic will less traffic.

Route 1. Oceanside

Your trip will take you out of Saigon via ferry. From there you will follow the coastline making stops as you see fit until you come to the arid area of Phan Thiet. You can choose to overnight in Vung Tau, Phan Thiet or continue to the Mui Ne peninsula where you can find more resort style options. Be aware that Mui Ne is heavy tourism and prices reflect that.

Route 2. Inland.

This route will take you via Cu Chi tunnels and through the interior passing Cat Tien Park to Dalat. You will encounter much heavier traffic and in some parts the possibility of bad roads. It is a more gradual climb into the mountains and has more populated areas.
Dalat, Nha Trang, and the Central highlands.

Route 3. Central Highland Tour

A 3 night 4 day trip from and back to Nha Trang is probably one of the most scenic and cultural drives you can take. I have spent many years finding the best route to travel and now that I have retired, I do not mind sharing.

Some hotels I recommend are not listed on booking sites, however, following are hotels I recommend for the destinations in the three routes I provide with a short reason why.

In Ho Chi Minh City

All three of these hotels are convenient for your crazy drive to the main road to depart Saigon. You can click on the picture for more information.

Thien Thao Hotel is outside the tourist area but in walking distance. Rooms are nice and decent buffet breakfast. Secure parking.

Duc Vuong Hotel is on edge of the action. Helpful staff and good buffet breakfast. Often offers freebees on your stay such as a free dinner.

Bich Duyen Hotel is a budget hotel in an alley close to all the action. Very helpful reception and a good value.

Hotel In Dalat

After 10 years of perhaps 100 stays in Dalat, there is only one I think the best but will offer a budget alternative.

The Dreams Hotel is simply the best I have ever found in Dalat. Clean, comfortable, well designed, with a staff that will help you arrange anything without profit motive in mind. A rare hotel that has air conditioners and separate shower stalls. Best breakfast in the city.

Nhat Vy Hotel is a bit away from the main market area but a good value

The Anna Suong Hotel is in a very good location near the market.

  1. Could you tell me how many days it would take to ride a motorbike from Ho Chi Minh to Na Trang using the central highland tour. route . Do you supply bike hire and help with accommodation as well?
    Kindest Regards Geoff

    1. It takes 3 or 4 days depending on route. In Buon Ma Thuot stay in Eden hotel. In Dalat stay in Dreams hotel. In Gia Nghia use Memories hotel…. Wing it if you go via Mui Ne. Sorry I cannot supply bike. There are places in tourist area in Saigon where you can buy a cheap junker. Be careful… you will be driving illegally, and roads dangerous because of different driving rules. Stay safe
